In fact, it was a rather critical component of British/American political thought to not have large peace time armies since the times of Charles I, let alone large conscript armies. (That does not mean that Canadians and Americans were hostile to armed forces-but in 1914, the Canadian Militia and the US National Guard did not exactly had the same prestige and politicial as the Tzarist army, the French Army, let alone the German one)
